Math Olympics: Grades 3-8

The objectives of the ACSI Math Olympics are to:

  • Stimulate an interest in mathematics

  • Recognize the achievement of students in mathematics

  • Provide an opportunity to meet and fellowship with other math-oriented students

  • Offer opportunities to glorify God in the use of mathematical abilities beyond classroom situations

The Math Olympics consist of three or four timed written tests. Competition takes place in two categories:

  • Computation: Problems consist of a computational variety of fundamental operations

  • Reasoning: Problems are usually more difficult than the daily mathematical assignments for the student's grade level; they involve more than one operation and/or concept and include story problems, patterns, puzzles, etc.

Use of calculators or other electronic devices is not allowed in the ACSI Math Olympics.

Each school can send a maximum of three students per grade level (not per classroom) for each category. Students can compete in one category only.

Every student receives a ribbon award. First through fifth place in each category in each grade are recognized with a special ribbon; all other students receive an honorable mention ribbon. A special award is presented to the highest scoring student in each grade and category.

Speech Meet: Grades 3-8

The objectives of the ACSI Speech Meet are to:

  • Encourage students to develop communication skills and bring honor to the Lord through the use of these skills

  • Encourage students to speak audibly, articulately, expressively, and with poise

  • Provide an opportunity for students to speak in an audience situation

  • Encourage students to develop a commitment to the oral communication of God's Word and their Christian faith

The ACSI Speech Meet is divided into two categories: elementary and middle school. Sixth graders can participate at either level. Students demonstrate their speaking ability by presenting a selection to an audience. Microphones, costumes, and props are not used at the elementary level; they are optional for some categories at the middle school level. All presentations are memorized and students cannot use notes.

At the elementary level, each school can send two students per category per classroom to the District competition. Each student can participate in one category only. For middle school, each school can send a total of three students per category to District competitions.

Yearbook

Each year, students work with a faculty advisor to produce a pictorial record of the academic year. Students in 6th-8th grades may participate in this activity as an academic elective. Students can serve as photographers, photo editors, copywriters, and page designers.

Field Trips

Field trips are designed to supplement the academic curriculum. Students participate in four or five trips each year, including arts performances and visits to community businesses, nature preserves, museums, and government buildings. Permission slips are sent home prior to each field trip.

Outdoor Education

Students in sixth and seventh grades attend outdoor education at a regional campground for three days. There is an additional charge for this educational experience.

Fine Arts

Students in grades 1-6 attend two weekly music classes. These classes are designed to promote music appreciation and develop music reading skills. Middle School students may participate in the art, choir, drama, or technology arts electives. Students in grades 6-8 may also serve on a worship team that participates in weekly chapel services.

FIRST LEGO League

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 whose mission is to inspire in science and engineering among today’s youth. The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a program for elementary and middle-school students. Each year, FLL announces a challenge that teams must answer by building a robot capable of performing various “missions.” Teams then gather for local and state tournaments, where they are recognized for their teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, strategy, design, and leadership.

At FVCA, students in grades 4-8 can participate in the FIRST LEGO League. The program is supervised by a team of parent facilitators.

Currently, FVCA sponsors three FIRST LEGO League teams.

Spirit Week

Each year FVCA students and staff develop a week of activities to encourage school spirit and spiritual growth. The student-led activities may include a week-long Penny War to support missions and service projects, a staff vs. student volleyball match, theme days, and a special talent program called "Praise Craze" to culminate the week's activities.

Chapel

Students meet weekly for chapel service each Friday school is in session. Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade meet together at 8:30 AM. Middle School students meet for chapel at 2:20 PM. Chapel services feature programming designed to encourage each student's spiritual development. Special speakers, musical programs, dramatic presentations, and activities are scheduled for chapel services. Parents are always welcome to attend chapel services.

Missions Week

The purpose of Missions Week at Fox Valley Christian Academy is to foster a greater understanding of the biblical mandate for missions and to gain an understanding of God's desire to redeem all peoples of all nations. Students and staff study an area of the world or specific people group or groups in order to gain an awareness of, and compassion for, the unreached millions in our world.
